The main photograph may just seem like a picture of two camels in a pick-up vehicle. However having met Gert, a camel lover, on a hike telling us how he first discovered that transporting camels was not as easy as it seemed, do not be mistaken. Being a novice, he paid a R400 deposit and hired a trailer. What the Rental Company was unaware of was that Gert wanted to transport two camels all the way from the Northern Cape to Pretoria.
Having never been involvd with camels beforehand, Gert himself was unaware that there was a knack, a particular technique of transporting camels. If not, the camels were liable to become irate and literally destroy the vehicle or in this case, the trailer. After 100kms this was indeed the case. There were already huge holes in the floor of the trailer and the sides were the worse for wear.
It takes Gert an hour and a good few beers to tell the full story. Being a raconteur of note, one will hang onto his every word. If you would like to hear the complete saga, join us on the next hike but have a few beers handy.
Oh, by the way, on returning the trailer all that it cost Gert apart from the initial rental was the deposit which he had to forfeit. The next time they will probably enquire what the rentor wishes to transport and if the blase answer is camels, they will decline to rent it out.
